Making Twitter Smarter →
Fred has posted about a Firefox extension today that makes Twitter a little bit smarter. Basically, it identifies stock names in Twitter message and then turns them into links. That’s great in principle, but it doesn’t really nail the problem. The first comment sums the whole thing up for me. I don’t want to install extensions in Firefox, Twitter needs to be opened up a bit and...

ezplan.me
[Full disclosure: I was in Uni with Stu, he’s a good friend] Stu has created a great little webapp for planning events. ezplan’s beauty is in its simplicity, 5 fields and you’re done. The app solves the ‘who can attend and when?’ problem. Once your event has been created you’re given a link to copy and paste to all attendees. Attendees simply enter their name...

Using CouchDB with Django - Eric Florenzano's... →
There’s another great tutorial on using CouchDB with Django here. Eric’s using CouchDB to keep track of his lifestream, the tutorial covers importing from Twitter. Personally I’d just use FriendFeed to do the leg work for me, but it’s a good example of what can be accomplished very easily with Django and CouchDB.

Roomba
Image by Vincent Ma via Flickr I bought a Roomba today. I needed a Hoover (Vacuum Cleaner) and was slightly astonished at how expensive those things are. A local shop were selling the Roomba 530 for £99, which seemed like a total bargain, the RRP is £200. A quick look at customer reviews on Amazon and I was convinced. I ended up getting the 560, which has a longer battery life, a 7 day schedule...

CouchDB
Image via Wikipedia Sounds lazy doesn’t it? If I was going back to further my education, which I have little desire to do at present, I’d probably study / research the field of massive datasets. CouchDB is a document-oriented database, which isn’t a relational database. Apache CouchDB is a distributed, fault-tolerant and schema-free document-oriented database accessible via...

The Start-Up Project : London
I got to go to The Start-Up Project in London yesterday, hosted by Amazon AWS. This was basically a couple of presentations by people using EC2, S3 and SQS to run their start-ups and reduce costs. There was a large emphasis on the later. Probably the most startling statistic for me was that S3 is storing 29 billion objects, up from 23 billion in July, and dealing with 70,000 requests per second!...
